Two forums up in FAQ's:
What is the ftp quota limit?
[Tutorial]Upload files without quota limitations
Personally never tried it though.

Default ftp quota - 07-20-2012, 04:31 PM

ftp quota should be removed as it does not enables us to use full disk space provided

Use the Backup Restore tool in the Control Panel. I've used it, nothing bad happens to the files. They just get uploaded and extracted to the public_html folder, nothing more. And the file limit is 10,000 and 1,500MB (1.5GB), so the limits are being met.

There's usually something in FAQ's about how much space a host is offering.

I know this is (kind of) grave digging, but having a limit on the number of files makes as much sense has having a limit on the total amount of space used. Depending on how the file system is set up, there could be a lot of useable disk space lost because of a ton of micro-files eating up the blocks.

It's good to keep in mind that a file system on a hard drive is set up to store the information in blocks, and those blocks all have a size. So if your block size is 5Kb but you upload a 1Kb file, you use the whole 5Kb block, and essentially use 5kb anyway. So if you upload tons of really tiny files, they could combine to a really small amount of logical disk space but would actually be using up every bit of physical disk space.

I was using this host but hit the wall everytime I tried using my Joomla site. Can't rally understand why this host is unwilling to set inodes to no less than 50k.

Ahh... In laymen term:
Every time a file is created or uploaded on a server, an inode is created. Simply say, inode is the count of the files on your web hosting account.

Even so we might have 1.5Gb diskspace offered here, it still comes with protective clauses that stand against us, the hosting users. Limitation on inodes is a good example of these clauses. Basically it means that when you have uploaded a certain numbers of files, you hit the roof.

When you hit the roof, you might get the following message in your FTP: "550 can’t create directory: Disk quota exceeded" even if you have used only 10% of whatever disk space you have on your hosting.

I would say you should not be as worried about what disk space you get. Even 500Mb would be enough for my huge Joomla site. Be more worried about inode limitation (number of files you can upload to your disk space).
