Default PHP 5.2.17? Really? - 07-31-2012, 12:45 PM

How can such an awesome service as this only provide php 5.2?

As of July 2012, "PHP 5.4.5 and PHP 5.3.15 released!"

Php 5.2 is old, unstable and is not secure. How can we all be using this? Come on 000, please, upgrade this for us!

There will be a lot of potential problems about upgrading. I think they are still testing this before implementing.

Where exactly is it unstable and not secure?
Did you check the bug tracker on recent PHP releases?

Also why would we need the latest version? Maybe if there was a massive problem then we'd most likely upgrade... However there isn't any faults with 5.2 so we won't upgrade!

As of 8-18-12, some critical components of Joomla 2.5 require a minimum PHP 5.3. For example, Akeeba backup's latest release will not run on PHP 5.2. I suspect that other components like admin tools will soon require PHP 5.3 as well. Any news about if/when PHP will be upgraded?

This has more extensively been covered in thread Upgrade php 5.2.X to 5.3.X

What could be done, as seen by other providers, to leave the choice of php version to the user. Those who need it can use 5.3, the others, for (in)compatibility reasons can stay at 5.2, until it is phased out.
