I am a newbie Web Designer and would like to learn Joomla or Wordpress. What can you suggest?

Personally, for a first timer Wordpress is by far easier, install latest version and choose plugins from wordpress.org that you need according to your plans for the site (make sure plugins are correct for the version of WP you have)
For me Joomla is for much larger sites and a little trickier to build your site unless you have an idea of how these scripts work and that makes Wordpress a great starting point.
