Default Can't Restore WordPress Site after Backup - 05-01-2012, 12:02 AM

000webhost.com deleted my account (and the WordPress blog, and the SQL database), because of inactivity.

Luckily, I [thought] I had backed up the site. However, I can't get it to load properly after I uploaded the files for the site and database, using the "one-click" apps.

There is no index.php file in the wordpress subdirectory.

The .htaccess file has only a single line:

RewriteBase /

Accessing the site with a browser yields only a directory listing.

Attempts to execute a .php file yields errors like:

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/a*******/public_html/wordpress/wp-load.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/a*******/public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php on line 36

What must I do to get the site working again? Perish the thought of having to start over from scratch.

Thanks in advance for any help.

wobble

P.S. - What is proper backup procedure?

OK, you might be able to salvage this, but I'll need some information.

1. What did you use to backup your wordpress installation?
2. What files DO you have in your backup?

Sound like you have an incomplete backup, but depending on what you have (or don't have) you might be able to get it back up and running again.

Default Can't Restore WordPress Site after Backup - 05-03-2012, 08:06 PM

000webhost apparently deleted the backups as well as the site itself, so I tried to do a fresh install of WordPress, after creating a new mysql database. When I ran the installation script, I got the error message:

"Can’t select database
We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the xxxxx database.
Are you sure it exists?
Does the user xxxxx have permission to use the xxxxx database?
On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_xxxxx. Could that be the problem?"

Control Panel shows that the database was created correctly (although there is no data in it), and I checked that the database parameters in wordpress/wp-config.php were correct. I included the secret keys, if that makes any difference.

Having once again started from scratch, I am at a loss as to what to do next. Please, any suggestions??

Yup, out of luck there. Backups should be stored OFF-SITE. It doesn't do much good to backup and store your data on the server when the"server" goes down. I do it religiously. ESPECIALLY with sites hosted on free services. Anything can happen.

Are you sure you are using the exact login data given to you when you created the database? That's a very common issue. Sounds like your current database is empty, so no harm in creating another one and trying again. If it still fails, then submit a ticket, but not before triple checking every setting and input box. I've done hundreds of wordpress installs, and still goof one up on the database setup once in a while.
