Question Looking for a free and simple flat-file news script compatible with 000Webhost - 06-07-2011, 03:49 AM

The topic says it all. I'm looking for a free or open source simple flat file (no database needed) news script I can embed within a div on my main page. I don't want simple as in completely useless with no features, I'm looking for simple as in only needed features (categories, upload photo, etc.), stable, easy to run and install, comprehensive install instructions that after being followed will result in a guaranteed working news system on your 000Webhost site.

In other words don't Google around and post links to what you find (I've come here after spending the last three days doing that), tell me about what you have actually installed, gotten running, and used. Extra points for tips and tricks relevant to 000Webhost (with its special HTML parsing) in case the instructions are not clear enough, but the script is good and you figured out what to do and don't mind telling someone else.

I really appreciate your help!

You could probably find one a lot faster by going throught hotscripts or some other place than asking here as this is not a script we all use daily.

However, you could use some sort of CMS for this, like e.g. Wordpress

Thanks for the advice, but the key here for me is simplicity. I'm a battle-scarred CMS warrior and I just got through removing Drupal from my site. It had all the features I wanted and was way too unstable, way too hard to run, and had way too many errors.

So I'm going back to my roots, designing a simple site, using simple scripts (if any) and CSS instead of exclusively HTML (I started my first site, UnrealED Exordium somewhere around 1999-2000). Anyhow that's why the new site is Retro. I just need something I know will be there, fully working, without my having to mess with it.

I have tried HotScripts, PHP Dungeon and a few other places. The problem is I simply don't have the time and am not willing to invest the energy in installing a couple hundred so-called simple news scripts to try to get them to work. And why should I have too? There have to be a few people here who have installed something which meets my needs on their site. All I'm asking for is that they share what they have found.

So still open to any news script suggestions meeting my needs. Thanks!

@Deathbliss;

Try this. I understand why you WOULDN'T want to undergo that search - because I just did. This setup was the simplest one that still let me code however I wanted to.

Thank you very much!

I stumbled on this and its working right now:
http://www.scripts.com/php-scripts/n...t-news-system/

But it does weird things like this:
This doesn'\t look right...

And I can't attach pictures or files. Still if someone wants what I was looking for, a simple flat file news system that will actually run when you install it, this is another alternative.

TIP: In the docs folder is a readme that YOU MUST READ if you want to integrate nSys into your site!

Thanks again for the help! I'm going to install PHP_Blogger right now and see how it works -

hi, new to the forums, this should work, http://korn19.ch/coding/utf8-cutenews/ its a flat file news script, has a admin panel to log in and can edit templates and integrate into existing web page very easily. can show as many news posts per page as you want, has smilies, comments etc etc. this allows avatar as far as i know, not sure about in page though havent tried that yet. Very very good. has categories upload pictures everything you asked. plus there are many mods out there to change it how you wish.

I'm sorry if I didn't give you the pointer to my blog and let you see it for yourself like the best of all live demos - LIVEBLOG - and you can get a feel for what you can do. I'm just in tune-up mode right now, so the posts are lookin' plain jane. When I get up to speed, I'll really have it tricked out just the way I want it so that the code creators would never notice it was theirs. Glad I could be of help, @Deathbliss.

I think a Wordpress template would help you a lot in this. Not only that it is better-looking but it also has many plugins that can help you with your website.
Database is not bad, 000webhost handles them with ease!

I'm not sure why you're so insistent on a flat file script ._.

I'll answer that as it has relevance in my situation as well; when you run a site and your host only gives you one or two databases (as is the case here @ 000webhost.com), you have a limited number of options if you wish to have multiple applications running on your site if you're thinking for-profit (membership/sales/auction sites, etc.). Unless you're highly experienced and know how to cram multiple, differently-named MySQL tables onto a single database (which I'm PAINFULLY going thru right now), flat-file resources are a real enabler to help plow through a domain website build. I'm REALLY happy about the resource that I gave out earlier, and am in the process of tricking it out exactly how I want thanks to its' utter simplicity, the ability to use PHP, and the light weight of the code framework itself - GENIUS .
