Default Script to block an IP - 04-21-2012, 10:17 AM

Having some trouble with a "splogger", or content thief, whom I would like to lock out of my blogger blog. I found some code to accomplish this here:

http://www.blogtechnics.com/blogger/...es-on-blogspot

The procedure requires that I upload a php file to the server. The author of the script says "simply upload the file", but I am not finding it quite so simple.

I created the php file on my computer, and then set up a subdomain here on 000webhost.com, which I understand supports php.

I then tried to upload the php file using the file manager, but could not seem to make it happen. I was able to Browse to the php file on my computer, but the upload does not seem to be occur. Or maybe the file manager is putting the php file somewhere I cannot see it.

From the article I notice that somehow the script or php file is to be transformed into a URL. Not quite clear to me how that would occur.

Is there some information here on how to upload a script and transform it into a URL?

Probably this is very basic. I appreciate your help with it.

Thank you for your insights.

John Harris

ps. This morning the php file, which is called limogesblocker.php appears in the list shown by the file manager. So it did upload. Here is a screen grab. Following instructions from the host, I deleted a file called default.php.

There exists a URL for my hosted site, which is shown, but how the script is to be somehow made accessible through this URL is not clear to me. Thank you for your insights. John

Did you do step: 2?
Quote:
Now paste the URL of above file in the place of BlogspotIPblocker.PHP in below script 2.
The URL would be wherever you uploaded the php file to eg: www.example.com/BlogspotIPblocker.PHP

As I understand this, the URL is to be created by appending a slash and a filename to my 000Webhost URL. Makes sense. I will try it and report. Many thanks. John.

Okay, I set up the code as prescribed in both the blog template and on my site. So far, it does not do anything. As a test case, I am using my own IP number, trying to block its access to my own blog. No luck.

I have carefully proofread the code.

Next question would be, is the script actually being called by the blog as visitors arrive? Is there way to learn this?

Many thanks for your insights. John

Just a thought here, but I think 000webhost has an IP blocking feature built into the control panel in the members area. Find it under the "advanced" section labeled "IP Deny Manager". Never used it myself, but I've seen it there.

You could also just block the IP in .htaccess. Would be much simpler.

nevermore93 and lobrc appear to misunderstand OP's requirements.

Blogger blogs are hosted by Google as a subdomain of blogspot.com

The workaround that OP wants to employ would use 000webhost solely as host for a single external javascript file.

Yes, I am trying to protect a blog on Blogger.com. If I had chosen a Wordpress blog, I would be able to use the .htaaccess feature, and the "deny" command, to shut out the robot visitor. Blogger has no equivalent feature or command to shut out an IP.

I have learned that this robot visitor is called a "scraper." It basicallly captures all of your site's content. The pirate or robot runner then sets up a exact duplicate web site and sells advertising on it.

A limitation of Blogger is that it has no command or command set that would shut out visitors with a particular IP. This is why it is necessary to, in effect, create such a command as a script on a website here.

I have also learned, however, that the all devouring robot, like most robots, arrives at my site with its Javascript disabled. This means the code I have been experimenting with here probably would not exclude the robot.

Many thanks for your ideas.

John Harris.

You can use 000webhost's IP Deny Manager. You can also change the .htaccess file.

No. Neither of those suggestions would work for OP.

Please re-read his requirement.
