you can do it that way, but no-ip can automatically redirect the port number within the domain settings... so no ugly url

@adslwebserver.co.cc,
wat i mean about the static IP is when u really wanted to provide hosting service, the dns thing, remember? although with the help of the dns update apps, but still TLD domains will takes time to propagate the dns record.

however, home based web hosting server is not really preferred by ppl, due to it might have lots of downtime. but still, it is good to become a scam hosting service, ppl pay more for low quality web hosting, lol. by the way, i am not doing this myself, just a suggestion if ppl wanted to scam, lol

and about my byethost reseller hosting, yeah, it is great, got lots of signups recently, even my alexa ranking is also going up, i am very happy about this anyway, do i know u? tell me ur nickname is byethost.

@Ryuzaki,
the only thing which is ugly about the no-ip subdomain is just the sub domain itself. since it will not show the port number. but still, u can see that this subdomain is actually redirected, not pointed via dns...

No you don't know me kitty and my nicknames not bytehost, I guesed you were running as one of their reseller's because of a couple of things like the Vista panel login screen opens when you enter wrong username and password... plus all their resellers have the same paid plans lol...

I used XAMPP for my home server. Runs fine with little or no adjustments...

The OP wants to run a web server open to the WWW, not a home server. I don't think XAMPP can be - or should be - used as a web server.

Xampp, is just apache bundled with php,mysql,perl... saves you time having to install these seperatly..

Another distribution that is quite good is called apachetriad.

if you start running heaving content from your home server... remember the speed is going to be terrible for many users trying to access your site at once. content management systems are a good example of requiring alot of resources. I think a home web server is fine for basic html content but your going to start pushing your dsl connection to the limit with heavy scripting software.

If your serious about your web content then a home based web server is not going to be for you.. So purchase some hosting from a datacenter.. think of it as abit of fun and a learning experience.

lol

@lenwhistler
the OP is not wanted to ask about how to run this thing, he is teaching how to run this thing, lol

@adslwebserver.co.cc,
fow me, if i wanted to have full control over a web host, i will at least purchase a VPS and run debian etch. of course, also install webmin to be easier for me to do work.

it is also good to have total control over a web host especially linux/bsd ones
