try SMF easy to use easy portals alround easy to learn and in no way the same to phpbb so if you are use to phpbb commands that I recommend if your ready to learn a little go for SMF

SMF and phpBB are two of the best free forum software available today, both are extremely powerful and offer a variety of styles and mods.

Try SMF, or lately ive been messing with mybb and it seems pretty good.

I like phpBB 3, I know that phpBB 2 had spam problems and I assume they fixed it for version 3. Another nice free forum is Phorum 5.2.8 www.phorum.org
