are the cookies a must have if we would like to create a member area?

Usually, $_COOKIE and $_SESSION variables are used for maintaining login status of users.
However, $_COOKIE can be used only when users allow cookies in their computer.

I don't think cookie is a must have in creating a member area. Instead of cookies, you
can use $_SESSION variable.
