Default Newbie needs help with smf - 08-20-2008, 08:22 PM

Hi,
I am new to building a website and am somewhat confused.

I finally managed to get smf working but when I access my forum it tells me I am using an outdated version and need to upgrade. I used the Fantastico Autoinstaller and now I can not figure out how to update the program.

It is asking for FTP information: FTP Server, port, username, password,
Local path to SMF.

I know my usernamer and password but everything else I am not sure of. The form was completed by default with the following info:

FTP Server: localhost

Local path to SMF: //home/a5502647/public_html/forum

port: 21

I filled in my username and password and got this error: 530 Login authentication failed

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here please??

Also how do I link my forum to my web site?? I have a page named "Forum" but when I click on it I get "page under construction" so obviously I am not/have not done something correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. If I posted this in the wrong place please tell me where I should have posted. Don't use forums much

Probably,FTP Server is your site name: site.subdomain.com or site.com, if any.
Ftp port is 21 by default.
Usarname is your ftp user, it means that: a5502647 is your user
Password is the password that you made for your site.
Local path, leaves just thus:/home/a5502647/public_html/forum or //home/a5502647/public_html/forum.

Try it.

Thank you for your help.

I am not getting the login error any more now it just seems to not do anything. The page reloads but that is about it. This is driving me crazy!

How do I change packages directory and files in it to be writable?

I am trying to install a blog as well and it needs to be upgraded also so I am hoping if I can figure out how to do 1 I will be able to do both (fingers crossed).

Still haven't figured out how to link the forum/blog to my website either

Thanks again
