Can't get PHP Mail() function to work on my account

I have a free PHP hosting tier and can’t figure out how to get the php mail() method to work. I see in my dashboard that 2% of my 25 sendmail quota was used, however on the same page in the sent emails section it shows 0. Please advise.

Try hovering over the graph and possibly the actual usage will show.

phpmail won’t really work properly on the free plan anyway, try SMTP as above.
