Have looked at my ‘free’ site and I haven’t got a settings -> general tab. can’t see anywhere I can change version of php which I need to update from 5.2. Help.
Have also got a paid site and you can do it there - but it’s under software section of cPanel.

You can change the PHP on the new panel.
If you don’t have the new panel then head to 000webhost.com, signup a new account with a new email and you’ll be able to create a site where you can change PHP via general settings.
