How can I put the website down?

I don’t want to delete my website but don’t want it to be live for a couple of months either because it has not been perfected.

How do I do this?

preferably, there would be a blank screen etc when I put the website in. I don’t want this incomplete version to be live (but I accidentally did make it live a while ago!).

Open public_html

Take index.html and rename it ANYTHING else .html

Then make a new file called index.html and leave it empty, upon visiting your site only a white page will show.
