Can't use cloudflare proxy anymore?

With the old 000webhost, there was an “A record” which could be used with cloudflare’s proxy.
Now you can only use the cname record. Cloudflare’s proxy helped against DDoS attacks (on top of whatever 000webhost’s protection is).
I feel like 000webhost lost a feature with this, although please correct me if I’m wrong in saying that this cannot be done anymore.
